European Urban Resilience Forum with participation of LIFE LOCAL ADAPT

Since 2013, the “Open European Day” - from this year on the “European Urban Resilience Forum” - takes place in Bonn. The Forum is a unique platform to learn about and discuss strategies for adapting to climate change and thus increasing the resilience of cities. A special characteristic of the forum is its very interactive format.

This year, the focus laid on smaller municipalities. In the European Union, there are tens thousands of small towns and smaller municipalities compared to around 800 cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Capacities, resources and administration of smaller municipalities differ, sometimes considerably, from those of bigger cities. In one of nine sessions, the challenges of adaptation planning in smaller municipalities, their specific support needs and possible solutions were examined. Beside the Italian municipality of Urbino, also two partner municipalities of LIFE LOCAL ADAPT, the German municipality of Coswig and the municipality of Weiz in Austria took part in the discussion.

LIFE LOCAL ADAPT at the European Climate Change Adaptation Conference - ECCA 2019

The 4th European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (ECCA 2019) took place in Lisbon from 28 to 31 May. The ECCA aims to promote the dialogue on the different aspects of climate change adaptation, facilitate communication and knowledge sharing between researchers, policy makers and practitioners, and seek solutions and inspiration for adaptation to climate change.

The project LIFE LOCAL ADAPT was presented on this European platform. Experiences from the cooperation with municipalities in the project regions and in the application of different methods and information platforms were shared and discussed at various sessions with the conference participants. In a special session, LIFE LOCAL ADAPT and four other LIFE projects informed about their work and the results of adaptation to climate change. A close exchange of information between the projects is planned for future.

March 2019: Contest started in Saxony - Funding for municipal climate adaptation projects!

Applications with ideas regarding heat stress, drought or heavy rain until 1 July 2019.

LIFE LOCAL ADAPT supports Saxon municipalities with projects of adaptation to climate change. At least three project ideas for non-investive measures are funded with an average of 30.000 EUR. In this way, municipalities can better protect the population from the effects of heat or flooding, plan green infrastructure or improve rainwater retention.
